About the 762 curves
The number is not marketing — the curves are signposted, and t-shirts in Pai count them for you. What matters practically is that they come continuously for roughly two of the three hours, and the shared minivans on this route are driven briskly. A significant number of passengers who are not normally travel sick are sick on this road.
A private car does not remove the curves, but it changes three things that matter: you can sit in the front, you can ask the driver to slow down, and you can stop. On a shared minivan none of those are available. If anyone in your group is prone to motion sickness, or you are travelling with young children or an older relative, this is the difference between a memorable drive and a bad morning.
Either way: take motion sickness tablets before you set off rather than when you start to feel it, sit as far forward as you can, and look at the road ahead rather than at your phone.
Stops worth making on the way
With a private car the journey becomes part of the trip rather than something to endure. The Mok Fa waterfall sits just off the road early on, the Pong Dueat hot springs make a natural break, and there are several viewpoints near the top of the climb where the whole valley opens up. Coffee stops have grown up along the route specifically to break the drive.

Practical tips
- Take motion sickness medication before departure, not once you feel unwell — by then it is too late.
- The road is at its worst in heavy rain. In the wet season, an early start gives you the best conditions.
- Pai is small and walkable, so you do not need a vehicle once you arrive.
- Flights to Pai use a very small airstrip with a very limited schedule and are frequently cancelled in poor weather. Do not build a tight itinerary around one.
- Riding a motorbike over Route 1095 is popular and accounts for a steady stream of injuries among riders learning on the way. It is not a beginner road.
